Summary

Kii.am is an engineering contractor with a long history of developing and producing handheld dental devices. We were one of the first to be involved with pen-style LED curing lights.

Year:2012

Timeframe:2 years

A meeting of minds

The journey in product development is often a rough ride. We completed the development of the first Smartlite model in 2004 and opened the way. It was clear to see that the future lay here.

Our client company was inspired and decided to continue by working on the 2nd generation with their internal team. "No problem at all - call us when you need us", we said. So during the next few years they made gains - but just not enough. By 2012 they called us to step in again.

Pressures of miniaturization

Achieving the desired functionality within the very restricted space of a pen-like body proved to be a tough challenge in many aspects. Primary among these was to ensure that the optics would perform as intended. Would it allow dentists to have the dexterity that they need? How could all the hardware be made to fit inside? Would the device be reliable enough and hold its charge for long enough?

Continuous testing

When the company returned the Smartlite project to us, we had to face these engineering questions. We completely redesigned the optics, using a collimated beam to ensure homogenous performance within the curing area.

We created many prototypes along the journey towards shaping a device with excellent intra-oral access, a long rotatable tip and simple one-button operation.
Along the way, constant testing and consultation with Dentsply ensured that we were all on the same page.

Simplicity wins

The fact that Smartlite Focus has been a mainstay in many dentists' clinics for over a decade points to its innate engineering excellence and dependability in 'getting the job done well'.

It provides reliable light curing over larger distances. It uses one mode for direct and indirect restorations. The battery pack is replaceable, rapidly charged and long-lasting. Smartlight also has 'Smart Recharge Technology' that initiates one of three charging modes (Automatic, Standard and Standby) according to battery condition.

Enduring presence

While more sophisticated LED curing lights are now taking a larger share of the market, Smartlite Focus continues to be the 'Toyota Corolla' of the line-up: incredibly reliable, highly practical and offered at an appealing price/performance point. A well-made and highly professional product always earns a long-term presence in the market.

Over 75,000 units have been sold to-date.
