Magicure
Superior, versatile dental curing light with multi-wave technology
Summary
Kii.am is an engineering contractor with the unusual advantage
of undertaking both the product development and serial
manufacturing of complex hand-held devices. We major in the
dental market, while also serving the dermatology and veterinary
markets.
Timeframe:2 years

The main targets
The central goal was to develop a dental curing light that stands above others in a crowded market - both in terms of its functionality and ergonomic design. A powerful curing light, practical versatility and extended operating time were three key targets towards achieving the ultimate performance of the device.

Raising the bar
Strauss Diamond came to us at Kii.am with high expectations: powerful LEDs; ability to cure different composites; extended power management; slim profile and comfortable handling. Putting all this into the right package was a project that took over 20 months of development.
Kii.am followed our long-standing 'lean development' approach - testing and prototyping in small increments to ensure that we're on the right path and don't need to backtrack.

Methodical progress
We began by researching the various dental composites and learning how quickly each reacts to curing light. This led us to specify that the head must contain LEDs of differing wavelengths to ensure full curing for any composite formulation. We then designed an array of 7 high-powered LEDs - some with blue light and others with UV light. We also added an 8th light to the head to serve as a flashlight for diagnostic inspection.
As specialists in LED lighting, Kii.am engineers calculated all the critical needs for an optimal curing light - including optical power emission, wavelengths, time on and heat generation.
The next step focused on power usage and management. We studied which Lithium-Ion battery was the best to handle the high demand from the powerful LEDs and would hold its charge over many treatments.
As part of the process, we housed the battery in a unit that could be removed and charged individually. This allowed dentists to have a spare battery unit and thus ensure that Magicure is always operational.
Finally we invested great resources to ensure that Magicure has strong aesthetic appeal by giving it a slim aluminum casing.

Ticking all the boxes
The final product has been a true testament to precise planning, inspired foresight and careful production. Magicure is one of the most advanced and elegant curing lights on the market. It handles dental composites of all kinds and also serves as an inspection light. Its battery holds a long charge and when low can be quickly swapped out for a fully-charged second battery. All electronics are enclosed in an elegant and stylish aluminum body.
Aryeh, manager at Strauss Diamond said: "The evident quality and style of this curing light, combined with its impressive functionality, makes it a winner in every market that it enters."

From the market
Dental professionals like the way that Magicure looks, how it feels and its ability to function as a highly versatile tool. They report that the diameter, angle and power of the light is ideal for doing a good job. The device has been sold in the USA, France, and Israel, with resellers showing great interest in South America and the Far East.
